Synthesis and characterization of Mn-TiO2-SiO2 composite and preliminary study of its activity test as photocatalyst for degradation of methylene blue have been studied. The synthesis was conducted by sol-gel method at room temperature using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), titaniumtetraisopropoxide (TTIP) and manganese(II) chloride as precursors followed by thermal treatment at 500oC. The characterizations were performed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectrometry, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrometry and surface area analyzer. The photocatalytic activity test of composites for degradation of methylene blue was carried out in a closed reactor equipped with UV and Visible lights. In this test, the effect of ratio of Ti/Si composites, metal ion concentration of Mn, pH and time of irradiation on the effectiveness of photodegradation of methylene blue were studied. The results indicate that Mn-TiO2-SiO2 composite could be synthesized through sol-gel method followed by thermal treatment with the molar ratio of Ti/Si=60/40 and the optimum concentration of manganese was 2.5% wt. The Mn-TiO2-SiO2 composite significantly increased the photodegradation activity of methylene blue at pH 10, with the percent degradation of 84.41% for 30 min under irradiation of visible light. The percent degradation under irradiation of UV light was 20,00%.
