2011 | Disertasi | PROGRAM STUDI S2 ILMU KIMIAIn order to reduce dyes waste from textile industry that are hazardous to the environment, the advanced oxidation processes had been applied to degrade procion red MX 5B and indigo dyes. The aim of this research was to get information about the influence of UV irradiation, H2O2 and Fe2O3 catalyst on degradation of the dyes. The process was practically done by interacting the dyes solution with H2O2 solution and Fe2O3 catalyst in a closed container equipped with UV lamp and stirring. The effectiveness of degradation process was determined by UV-Visible Spectrometry method. The optimum condition for photodegradation of procion red MX 5B was obtained at a dye:H2O2 molar ratio of 1:5, with 0.15 g of Fe2O3, and pH 2 and for indigo was obtain at a dye:H2O2 ratio molar of 1:4, with 0.05 g of Fe2O3 and pH 2. The UV/H2O2 system could degrade procion red MX 5B and indigo up to 73.7% dan 76.2%, respectively. The addition of Fe2O3 catalyst increased photodegradation of procion red MX 5B and indigo up to 91.6% and 93.6% respectively. The photodegradation of procion red MX 5B and indigo follows pseudo first order reaction with respect to the dye concentration and kobs values of 1.5 x 10-2 min-1 and 3.4 x 10-2 min-1, respectively. Photodegradation of the studied dyes by UV/H2O2/Fe2O3 system resulted in benzene and substituted benzene. In conclusion, the UV/H2O2/Fe2O3 system can degrade procion red MX 5B and indigo dyes effectively.
