This research investigates the effect of economic and social factors toward one's intention to engage in polygyny, a study of master degree students in FEB UGM. In the great Indonesian dictionary, Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI) polygyny has meaning as a marriage system that allows one man to have several wives in the same time. Even though polygyny is permitted in many cultures, religions, and laws, it still raises polemic among the society. According to the regulation, polygyny marriage is also permitted in Indonesia, as stated in Marriage Act No. 1 Year 1974 that a husband is allowed to marry another woman in several prerequisite conditions-both alternative requisites and cumulative requisites. The alternative requisites are: the wife cannot fulfill the obligation as wife, has physical disability, or is unable to bear children, while the cumulative requisites are: there is a wife approval, the husband has enough income to afford more than one wife and her children, and the husband can be fair with his wives and their children.
This research employed logit regression analysis. The logit used to find the respondent intention probability to engage in polygyny that affected by income rate, sexual need, socio-cultural construction, religion, and an extent of polygyny campaign/publication. As the result showed, the factors significantly affect one's intention to engage in polygyny are sexual need, socio-cultural construction, and the large amount of campaign/publication of polygyny.
