This research aim to identify potencial economic sector and structure of economic development in Kab. Tanah Datar. This study used annually time series data from period 2001 - 2005 that was taken from BPS and various sources. Method of analysis used in this study are Classic Shift Share, Shift Share Esteban Marquilas, Location Quotient Analysis, Klassen Typology, and Overlay. The result of analysis show that during period of analysis from 2001 - 2005 in Kab. Tanah Datar changes of economic structure didn't happen. This result can proved from increasing of primer sector share such said by Sjahrir (1995) that one of characteristic from changes of economic structure is decreasing of primer sector share. While empirical analysis from Location Quetiont show that during 2001 - 2005 potencial sector in Kab Tanah Datar are agricultural sector, building sector, services sector.
