This study empirically examines whether the effect of state and private bank ownership on X-efficiency. The purpose of this study is tofind and gets evidence about X-efficiency (technical, allocative and overall) in state and private bank and to determine the factors that affect in Indonesian banking. A non-parametric method of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been used to arrive at the efficiency scores. By using 62 samples banks, which are 17 state banks and 45 private banks during the period of 2001-2005, tested based on stages in t test and multiple regression, the result shows that the hypothesis generally are accepted. These indicate that state banks more efficient in allocative and overall efficiency than private banks. This study also shows that use of technology (proxied by number of bank owned ATMs), the size of the bank (measured by total assets), number of branches, and number of staff are the factors which influence X-efficiency in Indonesian banking.
