PERBANDINGAN KOMPLEKSITAS FRASA NOMINA DALAM ARTIKEL ILMIAH BERBAHASA INGGRIS DALAM DISIPLIN ILMU BIOMEDICINE OLEH PENULIS AHLI DAN PENULIS SISWA

Tesis ini bertujuan meneliti perbandingan kompleksitas frasa nomina dalam artikel ilmiah oleh penulis ahli dan penulis siswa dalam bidang ilmu biomedicine, menggunakan metode yang berbeda dari penelitian-penelitian sebelumnya. Penelitian-penelitian terdahulu tersebut telah menunjukkan adanya perbedaan variasi bahasa di dalam register, berdasarkan pemahaman bahwa kompleksitas bahasa berkembang sejalan dengan keahlian akademik atau kecakapan menulis seseorang. Analisis kuantitatif dalam studi ini mecakup tiga perhitungan: 1) perhitungan dari penggunaan enam fitur gramatika terkait pemadatan dan elaborasi struktural, 2) perhitungan dari frasa nomina kompleks di dalam dependent, 3) perhitungan dari jenis modifier. Sejalan dengan hasil dari penelitian-penelitian terdahulu, fitur gramatika pemadatan struktural digunakan jauh lebih banyak dalam artikel-artikel ilmiah. Kemudian, berbeda dengan hasil pada penelitian sebelumnya, tidak terlihat perbedaan kompleksitas frasa nomina yang nyata dalam artikel biomedicine oleh penulis ahli maupun siswa.

This research aims to investigate any differences in complexity of noun phrases in research articles written by professional writer and student writer in the field of biomedicine, employing different methods from previous studies. These previous studies have found that there are some variations of complexity of language within register, considering the fact that language complexity develops along academic proficiency or writing skills. The quantitative analysis in this study include three steps of calculation: 1) the calculation of the use of six grammatical features related to structural compression and elaboration, 2) the calculation of complex noun phrases within the dependents, and 3) the calculation of types of modifiers. Confirming the previous results, grammatical features related to structural compression are used more considerably in the articles. However, different from what have been discovered in earlier studies, there are no significant differences in complexity of noun phrases in the professional and student research articles.
