Deborah's Neurosis in Joanne Greenberg's I Never Promised You a Rose Garden

Penelitian ini akan membahas mengenai neurosis yang dialami oleh tokoh utama I Never Promised You A Rose Garden, Deborah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi apakah gambaran neurosis Deborah di dalam novel sesuai dengan kondisi neurosis seperti yang dirumuskan oleh Karen Horney. Obyek penilitian ini terbatas pada fenomena neurotik Deborah, maka dari itu pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan psikoanalisis. Dasar teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini merupakan teori neurosis yang dicetuskan oleh Karen Horney. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan ilmiah yang mendasari penelitian ini, peneliti akan menganalisis contoh-contoh dari novel menggunakan teori Horney untuk menilai seberapa baik penggambaran neurosis dalam novel ini.

This study will discuss about neurosis experienced by the protagonist of I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, Deborah and how it affects her character. The research will attempt to evaluate whether or not this novel portrays its protagonist's neurosis in a manner fitting Horney's formulations on neurosis. The object of the study is limited to the depiction of Deborah's neurotic phenomenon, and as such will be analysed using psychoanalytical approach. The basis used in this research is Karen Horney's theory of neurosis. To answer the research questions, the researcher will analyse various instances taken from the novel using Horney's theory to see whether the portrayal of neurosis is an adequate one.
