Harry Potter's Characteristics Influence towards the Conflict of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter adalah novel fantasi yang terdiri dari tujuh seri yang ditulis oleh J.K. Rowling yang kepopulerannya sangat besar dan menjadi salah satu alasan mengapa novel ini menarik untuk dianalisa. Tokoh utama cerita ini adalah seorang anak yatim piatu bernama Harry Potter. Seorang ahli teori menjabarkan bahwa tokoh di dalam novel adalah orang-orang yang direpresentasikan dalam sebuah karya dan masing-masing tokoh dibedakan oleh karakteristik yang mereka miliki. Skripsi ini membahas buku kedua dari seri tersebut yakni Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets dan terfokus pada karakteristik tokoh utama dalam karya tersebut yakni Harry Potter. Ada dua tujuan penelitian yang ditetapkan untuk menjawab rumusan masalah dalam skripsi ini. Tujuan penelitian yang pertama adalah mengidentifikasi konflik utama dalam plot novel tersebut. Yang kedua adalah menunjukkan dan menjelaskan karakteristik Harry Potter yang membuat ia mampu untuk menyelesaikan masalah yang ditimbulkan oleh konflik tersebut. Tujuan penelitian tersebut dapat dicapai dengan menggunakan teori yang mencakup unsur intrinsik dalam sebuah karya sastra yang meliputi penjelasan mengenai plot dan karakter. Penulis menggunakan metode studi pustaka untuk mengumpulkan data yang dibutuhkan dalam skripsi ini. Melalui pendekatan analisa kritik baru, terungkap bahwa 1) konflik utama dalam plot tersebut adalah pertentangan pendapat antara Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, dan Slytherin, 2) Harry Potter memiliki beberapa karakteristik yang ditunjukkan dalam plot tersebut yakni menentang, penasaran, pandai, protektif, berani, dan gigih. Kesimpulan dari skripsi ini menujukkan bahwa karakteristik Harry tersebut pada kenyataannya membuat ia mampu untuk menyelesaikan masalah yang timbul akibat konflik tersebut.

Harry Potter is a seven series of fantasy novel written by J.K. Rowling which the massive popularity is one of the reasons they are interesting to be analysed. The main character of the story is an orphan boy namely Harry Potter. A theorist stated that character is the persons represented in a work and each of them is differentiated from one and another by their characteristics. This undergraduate thesis is about the second book of the series which is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and it focuses on the main character's characteristics of the work which is Harry Potter. There are two objectives which are set in order to answer the research questions of this undergraduate thesis. The first objective is to identify the main conflict within the plot of the story. The second is to define Harry Potter's characteristics that enable him to solve the problem caused by the conflict. Those objectives are attained using theories which cover intrinsic elements of a literary work including the explanations about plot and character. The present writer uses the library research method to collect the data which are needed for this undergraduate thesis. Through the data analysis which applies the new criticism approach, it is revealed that 1) the main conflict is the disagreement between Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin, 2) Harry Potter portrays several characteristics in the story which are defying, curious, clever, protective, brave, and persistent. The conclusion of this study shows that those characteristics of Harry apparently make him able to solve the problem caused by the conflict.
