The White Working Class: Masa Depan Partai Demokrat Pasca Pemilihan Presiden Amerika Serikat Tahun 2016

Setelah pemilihan presiden 2016, Amerika Serikat mengalami pergolakan politik yang substansial. Kemenangan Donald Trump yang mengejutkan dan bulan-bulan pertama masa jabatannya yang kontroversial adalah panggilan kesadaran bagi banyak warga negara Amerika yang menimbulkan pertanyaan mengenai banyak aspek tentang negara tersebut. Pertanyaan yang paling utama adalah bagaimana hal itu bisa terjadi. Skripsi ini menemukan bahwa jawabannya terletak dalam kelompok warga negara Amerika yang sudah lama terlupakan: kelas pekerja kulit putih. Berbagai masalah ekonomi setelah resesi tahun 2008 serta bangkitnya jumlah penduduk imigran dan minoritas berpotensi menjadi kekhawatiran bagi kelas pekerja kulit putih yang akan ada dalam pikiran mereka saat mereka memasuki bilik suara. Selain itu, opini luas bahwa pemerintahan Obama gagal untuk menyalurkan kepentingan mereka membuat kelompok ini sangat menghendaki perubahan yang radikal dalam politik Amerika. Fenomena ini terbukti berkontribusi secara substansial terhadap kemenangan Trump. Skripsi ini juga menemukan bahwa Partai Republik tidak hanya memenangkan suara kelas pekerja kulit putih melalui tindakan mereka sendiri. Beberapa tindakan Partai Demokrat menjelang pemilihan presiden juga mengasingkan partai ini dari kelas pekerja kulit putih. Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, sebuah divisi menjadi terlihat lebih jelas antara dua faksi dalam Partai Demokrat: kubu ideolog progresif radikal dan kubu reguler yang lebih pragmatis. Dengan melihat statistik pemungutan suara dalam pemilihan presiden tahun 2016, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kelas pekerja kulit putih secara substansial lebih bersimpati pada kubu ideolog. Ketika Hillary Clinton yang pragmatis pada akhirnya mewakili Partai Demokrat dalam pemilihan presiden, banyak kelas pekerja kulit putih yang berpindah pada Partai Republik - sebuah faktor kunci yang menjadi salah satu alasan Partai Demokrat kehilangan kursi presiden. Skripsi ini bertujuan meninjau variabel-variabel yang menyebabkan Partai Demokrat kehilangan dukungan dari demografi kunci ini.

Following the result of the 2016 presidential election, the United States of America underwent a major political upheaval. The shock victory of Donald Trump and the turbulent first months of his presidency were a wake-up call for many Americans as many aspects about the country were called into question. The major question was how it could have happened. This thesis understands that the answer lies in a long-forgotten segment of the American people: the white working class. Economic troubles following the 2008 recession as well as the rise of immigrant and minority population gave the white working class new concerns that would be in their minds when they walked into the voting booth. Widespread opinions that the Obama administration failed to listen to their grievances made this group desperate for a radical change in American politics. This phenomenon would prove to be a substantial contribution to the Republican victory. It is found in the thesis that the Republicans did not simply win the white working class by their own actions. Several of the Democratic Party's actions leading up to the presidential election also helped to alienate this party towards the white working class. In the past few years, a key division became more pronounced between two factions in the Democratic Party: the radical progressive ideologues and the more pragmatic party regulars. By examining the voting statistics of the 2016 presidential primaries, it can be concluded that the white working class substantially favored the ideologues. When pragmatic Hillary Clinton was to represent the Democrats in the presidential election, a substantial part of the white working class swayed to the Republicans, which was a key factor that helped the Democrats lose the presidency. This thesis is to examine the variables causing the Democrats to lose the support of this key demographic.
