BIENNIALS OF SOUTH: INTERNATIONALIZATION AND DISCURSIVE TURN IN JOGJA BIENNALE EQUATOR

LUFT, ADELINA ELENA LUFT, Dr. G.R. Lono Lastoro S, M.A

2017 | Tesis | S2 Pengkajian Seni Pertunjukan dan Seni Rupa

The thesis explores biennials of South by taking as a case study the project of Biennale Jogja Equator in Indonesia. By situating the biennial in the larger sphere of the world phenomenon of biennials and the discourse of South biennials, the thesis examines the ways in which the biennial platform aligns with South rhetoric as found in the consulted literature. It introduces the context of internationalization of large-scale exhibitions in Indonesia, to the shift to internationalize Biennale Jogja within a discursive turn, which is further interpreted within a South framework. It suggests that the discursive turn opened by the international platform of the Equator, with all its subsequent programs and discourse, overlaps with the values of South collected from the literature. It argues for a reading of the Equator as a method to create horizontal dialogues and encounters, forming a space by means of artistic production in the same spirit with the South. The artistic encounter between the partner countries in each edition under the large curatorial themes limits to the exhibition venue to the point when Equator is used more as a method to create a platform of exchange and less as a critical space for discussion from the periphery to re-read the world.
