Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan psikologi dan teori gangguan kepribadian borderline oleh American Psychiatric Association (APA) dalam buku Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Pendekatan ini berfokus kepada karakter fiktif dari novel The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield. Hasil dari penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa Holden Caulfield menderita gangguan kepribadian borderline karena Holden Caulfield menunjukkan delapan dari sembilan gejala dari gangguan kepribadian tersebut. Hasil tersebut juga menunjukkan bahwa kematian adik laki-laki Holden Caulfield merupakan sebab utama mengapa Holden Caulfield menderita gangguan kepribadian tersebut, yang diperburuk dengan kurangnya hubungan dan perhatian dari orang-orang yang berada di sekitarnya.
This undergraduate thesis analyzes the characteristics and the causes of borderline personality disorder as seen through Holden Caulfield’s behavioral and emotional characteristics in the novel The Catcher in the Rye. This research is conducted by applying psychological approach and the theory of borderline personality disorder by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder Fifth Edition (DSM-5). This approach focuses on the fictitious character of the novel The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield. The result of this research shows that Holden Caulfield suffers from borderline personality disorder as he displays eight out of nine diagnostic symptoms of the disorder. It also shows that Holden Caulfield’s little brother’s death is the root cause of why Holden Caulfield suffers from borderline personality disorder and it is worsened by his lack of relationship and nurturing from people who are close to him.
