ABSTRACT The background of this research is based on the number of health problems in Indonesia are caused by lack of blood transfusions. Based on data from the Ministry of Health Indonesia in 2013, the area of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta need for blood about 71.202 bags but provided only 55.694 bags. This was due to lack of public awareness to become a voluntary donor. In addition, voluntary donors in Indonesia showed different behavior patterns based on time donors, namely: first, donors who donate blood regularly every 75 days; second, donors are not routinely donate blood and they only donate blood during certain events; and third, the donors who donate blood only at the time of need. The third donate blood behavioral patterns indirectly affect the amount of available blood stocks. This study aims to determine differences in behavior patterns to donate blood at the PMI Yogyakarta. This study used a qualitative research method. Through qualitative research, researchers can dig deeper information about the behavior of donated blood. Key informants in this study are the blood donors, while supporting informants are staff of PMI Yogyakarta. Data of this study is presented in descriptive form accompanied by tables and figures. Based on this research, it was found that the differences in behavior patterns of donate blood happen because of their differences in motivation among the donors. Motivation owned by regular donors is to maintain body condition in order to stay healthy, while donors who are not routinely donate their blood have the motivation to do a health check, and donors who donated their blood when needed have motivation to help others. Despite having a good knowledge about donated blood, the differences in these motivations affect the different attitudes of donors in defining act of donating blood. Attitude and motivation has an impact on the intensity of donating blood. Keyword: Motivation, Knowledge, Attitude, Action
