Abstract The space between rural and urban areas becomes an object research within this paper. Located between Demak and Semarang, Onggorawe Village has a combined character of rural and urban patterns, which affects the existence of formal and informal sectors. Thus, the phenomenon generates the transition from agricultural livelihood to industrial one, caused by the emergence of informal territory and local government policies, which leads consequences. The first consequence is related to the emergence of the left over space caused by the land use transition from agricultural to industrial along this desakota region. The second consequence refers to the presence of the informal sector along one side of Onggorawe Village at the northern side of the Pantura Line. Hereafter, this paper aims to analyze the correlation between these two consequences. In analyzing the practical field, this paper will use two concepts, i.e. leftover space and territory. The concept of left over space (Shaw and Hudson, 2009) reflects that the urban planning may leave abandoned space. The abandoned land located between the highway and the river is an example of the left over space. Furthermore, the concept of territory revealed by Altman (1975) refers to the existence of territory and teritorialitas characteristic of actor showed by their bordering and ordering behaviour (Houtum, Kramsch dan Zierhofer 2005). The frame is used to analyze qualitatively the practical field by combining the primary and secondary data. At the practical field, this paper analyzes the context as factor caused the alteration of land use. The soil quality reduced by the infiltration of seawater, for example, is one of the natural conditions, which drives the local government to alter the land use. The diminishing agricultural land causes farmers and landowners losing their livelihoods. On the other hand, the development of the industrial sector is not able to accommodate local people to get other jobs. The people, who previously worked in the agrarian sector, have not been able to meet the requirements to become a part of the industrial sector. These practical contexts encourage the emergence of informal economic activity that operates independently, without any help from others. While the number of land is getting decreased, the necessity of land use for informal actors needs to be fulfilled. This problem is solved by transforming the left over space to be a place for these actors to conduct the informal economic activities. Teritorialitas characteristic of informal economic actors is seen through their emergence upon the left over space. Thus, it is characterized by the emergence of various teritories that can be seen from the physical condition of building and affect the interaction patterns among actors In conclusion, these informal economic actors undertake their activities along desakot region using the left over space. This bordering and ordering behavior shaped other functions of space, which can be reflected and analyzed through the concept of teritorialitas typologies on the left over space. Thus, the teritorialitas typologies affect the interaction pattern of each actor. Moreover, the research object can also be analyzed through the State’s perspective as another alternative of further research. The State’s weakness in controlling the illegal buildings and their altered functions becomes an interesting object to be studied then. Keywords: Territory, Informal Actor, Left Over Space, Teritorialitasity.
