ABSTRACT There are still 24.18% middle school age children did not attend school in the town of Magelang, Central Java. The existence of “Opened Middle School” in Magelang City certainly has gave a fresh breeze in the services of education for the poor. Although as an alternative school for children with certain conditions, the number of students in “Opened Middle School” Magelang city annually diminished by reason of child resigned in the middle of the period of study. Based on data, will be interesting to know why the “Opened Middle School” which should be able to reduce the rate of dropoutsin in Magelang city thus took place decrease quantity of pupils. Therefore, this research aims to find the background of declining levels of quantity of pupils in “Opened Middle School”. Research methods used in this research is qualitative method. Qualitative research is one of the research procedures that produce descriptive data in the form of speechor writing and the behavior of the people being observed. Determination of purposive sampling technique using informants and snowball sampling. From this research it can be concluded the same thing, both of working students and students who do not work. Students who choose to quit school because they personally don't have interest to schools, schools with various policy thus becomes a container that eventually curb the freedom of children. The students in the “Opened Middle School” is indeed want freedom so they feel uncomfortable when they were in “Opened Middle School” that has a policy to keep am eye on students even in activities outside of school. Student orientation is to be free from all sorts of restraints including family. So there is some students who decided to get out of school and chose to work. This is because for these kids get pocket money from your parents means they are bound on the responsibility as a child. Parents have the right to set them so as to get out of the zone they then choose to work by themselves. Because with so, they do not have the obligation to obey the desires of the parents and more freely in doing the things they want. Keywords: Dropouts, “Opened Middle School”, rational choice
