ABSTRACT THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY RADIO AS AN EMPOWERMENT MEDIA ON MANAGING THE ENVIRONMENT (Study on Hanacaraka FM Community Radio, Wonosari, Yogyakarta) The development of Gunung Kidul Region (at Yogyakarta) as a tourism destination area appeared to have some negative impacts. The need for relevant education and society’s awareness enhancement (related to managing the environment) has become a necessity to preserving the environment of Gunung Kidul region. A sustainable empowerment program is required, and utilization of radio (as the empowerment media) considered being the most efficient way to achieve that need. To carry out above duty, Hanacaraka FM Community Radio presents in the middle of the society with empowerment programs that put up the environmental issues. With interesting designed programs, they start to bring out changes to their listeners. Their listeners also feel the benefits from the existence of Hanacaraka FM. Not only they can add their knowledge and skill on managing the environment, but also they can establish relationship among them, using Hanacaraka FM community radio’s programs. This research is aimed to know the role of Hanacaraka FM Community Radio as an empowerment media on managing the environment at Dusun Jeruksari, Wonosari, Gunungkidul. This research uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis approach. Researcher observed all the facts that happened on the field to gain a complete description about empowerment process conducted by Hanacaraka FM Community Radio. Sampling method that used on this research is purposive sampling technique that was used to choose and determine the informants. The results of this research indicate that Hanacaraka FM Community Radio, as an empowerment media of the society, already has an active role on managing the environment at Dusun Jeruksari. This indication is showed from the positive impacts to the society. Furthermore, those impacts are connected with success indicators of empowerment program to measuring the role of Hanacaraka FM Community Radio itself.
