ABSTRACT The job division between male and female, or gender-based, in house-hold is highly inlfuenced bythe cultural context shaping the individuals. The gender-based job division for individuals living in Javanese culture contextwill follow the Javanese community’s patterns. It will also happen to individuals living in other cultur context, they will follow the patterns of the culture where they live in. The research is aimed to: 1) identify the job division shift between male and femalerelated to gender relationshipin Javanese family; and 2) identifythe motivesunderlying job division shift between male and female related to gender relationshipin Javanese family at Karangsari Village. The type of the research is qualitative research. The designemployed is phenomenological perspective. The setting of the research is Karangsari Villageof Pengasih Sub District,the Districtof Kulon Progo. The people at Karangsari Villageare typical of rural communities, so that socially, their relationship among one another are highly familiar. They are also stronglyconserve Javanese culture perspective saying thatgood femalesare those who work in domestic works. Based on the analysis, the research concludes that: 1) the job division shift between male and female related to gender relationshipin Javanese familyatKarangsari Villagetake place onspecific types of jobs. The job division shift in the aspect of domesticworks took place only on the dimensions ofhusbands share with their wifes in doing laundry, cleaning the house, andmade beverages for the family. The job division shift in the aspect of child caretook place onthe dimensions of husbands share with their wifes tobathing the children, accompanying the children in plaing and studying. The job division in the aspect of house-hold financial managementdid not shift. The house-hold financial management were mostly done by the wifes, husbandstook control on limited aspects. The job division in the aspect ofdecision makingshifted significantly. The family decision making for the older generation were dominated by husbands. The wifes were only treated as listeners although they were being informed about the matters that would be decided. The decision making for the younger generation were done based on agreement between husbands and wifes; and 2) The motivesunderlying job division shift between male and female related to gender relationshipin Javanese family at Karangsari Villagein the aspect of domestic works cover: 1) the need to educate children to take responsibilities; 2) to help to easewifes’jobs; 3) the needsor situation thatrequire husbands to do domestic worksincethe wifes work in productivework in public sphere; 4) the past experience before marriagethat the husbandsused to live independently.
