Pemaknaan Backpacking bagi Mahasiswa Backpacker Universitas Gadjah Mada

ABSTRACT Backpacking is a form of travel that is planned with minimal budgets and equipment are put into the backpack and the trip is done without the help of an agent. Performer of backpacking known as backpacker is generally performed by youth and one of them is students of Universitas Gadjah Mada. However, the community or a forum for a backpacker who has now appeared in cities yet to be discovered at the Universitas Gajah Mada. In addition, the different way of travel between common people and backpacker becomes interesting to do a research to determine the action undertaken by student’s backpacker of Universitas Gadjah Mada. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative method, this is to know the meaning behind UGM student’s action as backpacker in performing backpacking through theory of rational action and factors that encourage such action. The location of research at Universitas Gadjah Mada with eight (8) informants. The researcher collects the data through observation and deep interview. Sampling technique in this research is purposive sampling. In analyzing the data, researcher uses theory of rational action by Max Weber. The result of this research show that there are some typologies of backpacker which is divided on the basis of tourist destinations, the number of actors, and budget management. Backpacking overall is selected actions by backpacker as a way to show their existence by dividing the documentation and experiences through social media. Backpacker in defining backpacking action through the process of managing knowledge gained from the impulse of desire, family, friends, and the mass media. The knowledge that has been owned by someone constantly changing during the course of interaction. The knowledge gained previously is not completely change the selection of backpacking action, backpacker just have another alternative that is adapted to the the conditions at that time. Action selected by the tourist destinations, friends while doing backpacking, relationships, budget, time, and transportation. Key words: Backpacking, Backpacker, Meanings, Action, Typology
