This is demonstrated by Indonesia membership on the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) in 2011. Indonesian has been accepted as an associate member since June 2015, having previously assigned as an observer in March 2011. This raises the question of what is the strategic interest of Indonesia membership bid on Melanesian Spearhead Group. The author used neo-liberal institutionalism and the concept of Indonesian foreign policy and diplomacy to answer the research question. In this paper, the author argued that the submission of Indonesia’s membership on MSG reflected neo-liberal institusionalism of Indonesian Foreign Policy, embodied by the ecumenical diplomacy and look east diplomacy, which are objected to be able to influence policy related to its interest in West Papua without ignoring the interest of the member of MSG in other aspects, and this is triggered by the tendency of The Melanesian Spearhead Group which is used by groups of Melanesia, ULMWP of Indonesia and FLNKS of New Caledonia, to mobilize support for independence. Keywords: Indonesia, membership, Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), Neo-liberal institutional, the concept of Indonesian foreign policy and diplomacy, ecumenical diplomacy, look east diplomacy.
