ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the motivation of donors to donate and the motivation of donors to donate in LAZISMU. These issues are addressed starting from philanthropy Islam began to emerge in Indonesia in the early 20th century. Islamic Philanthropy is one form of social welfare efforts undertaken efforts of the clergy and volunteers. Zakat potential in Indonesia is getting the year increased. Besides the public interest through institutions pay zakat is also quite high. From these facts then comes the question of what the underlying motivation of donors to donate and why donors choose LAZISMU as amil zakat institutions selected for the distribution of zakat. In this research, researchers used the concept of motivation by Walgito, motivation is a state within the individual or organism which encourages conduct towards the goal. The motivation that has three aspects: drivinng state, signage and directional behavior and the purpose intended by the behavior. This study also uses rational choice theory of Coleman is the act intentionally to achieve a goal with purpose (and actions) are built by values or preferences. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method that departs from descriptive analysis approach. Informants taken by purposive sampling. Informants in this study consists of donors who donate at LAZISMU PWM DIY, chairman of the LAZISMU and board staff LAZISMU PWM DIY. The number of informants in this study were 13, 11 donors and 2 are LAZISMU’s dministrators. Data collected by interview and documentation. Data analysis technique using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this study found that, motivation donors consisted of religious motivation and social motivation. Religiously motivated more dominating than the social motivation. Intrinsic motivation is more dominating than extrinsic motivation. In addition, the theory of motivation by Walgito proven to be able to see how the process of charity appears. Secondly, the reason donors to donate via LAZISMU DIY is comprised of motivation rational and non rational motivations. a donor chose to charity through LAZISMU DIY more influenced by the driving factors are derived from the individual rather than pull factors emanating from the institutions.
