However, evidences in China suggest that corruption, to a significant degree, contributed positively at macroeconomic level. This makes current China’s anti-corruption measures bring negative consequences to the national economic performance. Despite this, President Xi Jinping administration continues anti-corruption campaign that first initiated in 2013, risking the economic progress as the most important legitimacy source for the Chinese Communist Party. This research argues that the continuity of anti-corruption program is a form of populist, rational policy. The populism aspect is related to the regime’s needs in responding to people’s demand on a clean government, while the rationality aspect is based on consideration that the policy fulfills the regime’s interests in (1) securing legitimacy, (2) purging political rivals, and (3) preparing friendly environment for China’s more liberal economy in the future. Keywords: Corruption, China, economic development.
