ABSTRACT Waste is a classic problem in this whole country, including the cultural city, Yogyakarta. Waste in unused thing resulted from production process whether it comes from households or industrials. Based on UU No. 18 tahun 2008 about Pengelolaan Sampah, waste is anything left whether it’s the result of human daily activities or natural process, whether it is in the form of solid of semi-solid matters, whether it’s organic or inorganic, whether it’s disposable or not, that considered not useful anymore and being thrown. Waste management needs to be held to decrease the volume of waste that will be thrown in to the landfill. The purpose of this research is knowing agency of women in waste management in Kampung Code Utara and their effort in managing waste. This research uses qualitative method with descriptive approach. The location for this research in Kampung Code Utara, Kelurahan Kotabaru, Kecamatan Gondokusuman, Kota Yogyakarta. Research uses 8 informants from Kampung Code Utara RT 01/RW 01 with different backgrounds, such as dustmen, staffs of trash bank organization, and housewife. Type of data that being used is primary data and secondary data, while collecting data methods using observation, interview, documentation and literature review. Data analyzing uses 3 steps, they are reduction, data display and conclusion. The result of research shows agency of women in managing waste is dominating and they also have the awareness to maintaining environment’s sanitation. But, not all of the people aware of waste managing such as sorting trash. There are still a lot of pile of trashes here and there, it shows that people in Kampung Code have low awareness of waste management and that they are still paternalistic. Many efforts in managing waste or maintaining environment’s sanitation have been done, such as trash bank, waste contribution fees, and routine kampung cleaning. Managing trash gives as positive financial effect on people in Kampung Code Utara, and also decreases the trash volume that be sent to landfill. The women have relation with BLH (Badan Lingkungan Hidup) and also some communities such as Merti Code Community. Keyword: waste management, environment, egency of women.
