ABSTRACT This study aimed to explore the role of art community named Taring Padi in using public space as deliberation area toward public right protection. The problem formulated in this study is how art community named Taring Padi uses public space as deliberation area toward public right protection. Taring Padi tried to use public space as deliberation area, deliberation done by Taring Padi like “musyawarah” (disscuss and reach consensus together), change ideas each other about social, political, and law issues happening in Indonesia. The result will then become an art in form of public right protection. To ease data analysis, this research uses concept coming from Habermas about public space and deliberation in his book “The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere” dan “Betwen Fact and Norms”. This research uses qualitative method in form of singular case study. Data analysis unit in this research is Art Community “Taring Padi”. Data is obtained by observation, interview, and literature study. Data is analyzed by using inductive qualitative approach, it is data, fact, and empirical information based analysis. The research shows that in using public space as deliberation area, Taring Padi has the role to create their own public space to deliberate where it will become art for next. In deliberating public right protection, Taring Padi consider public space as media to make low strata community to deliver their aspiration. The conclution taken from this research shows that all societies can create their own public space. In that public space, deliberative democracy is going on to discuss issue developing in society. In this public space, opini is also formed based on deliberation consensus which will be unified as one rational idea. Keyword : Taring Padi, deliberation, public space
