ABSTRACT Multinational Corporation (MNC) has been one of the most important actors in international economy and politics. It used to be dominated by players from developed countries but in the past twenty years, we are starting to see more players coming from developing countries, including China. Ever since they opened their economic system and joined World Trade Organization (WTO), China has been pushing domestic firms to enter the international market and be significant players in it. One of Chinese successful firms is Lenovo. They successfully did their internationalization strategy by utilizing China’s economic system that was starting to be liberalized and making linkage with incumbent MNCs. Lenovo also took advantage of government’s policies in order to support their internationalization strategy. With those strategies, Lenovo has successfully changed their status from a latecomer firm into a multinational corporation. This thesis will try to examine two factors related to the internationalization strategy of Lenovo. The first one is Lenovo’s strategy of making linkage with incumbent MNCs and how they use it to leverage resources from them. The second one is Lenovo’s strategy of utilizing government’s policies to support their international expansion. These two factors are very important in their attempt to be a multinational corporation. The research method that is used in this thesis is qualitative method with literature study as the data collection method. At the end of this thesis, I conclude that Lenovo has successfully become a multinational corporation because they were able to benefit from government’s help in their country while at the same time, achieve the opportunities at the international market. Keywords: latecomer firm, multinational corporation, internationalization strategy, China.
