Sekolah Paud Gajah Wong: Resionalitas Dibalik Pendirian Sekolah di Kalangan Kaum Miskin Kota

ABSTRACT Ledhok Timoho Community is a collective of the urban poor by profession as laborers, beggars, scavengers and other informal sector workers who stay in the region at the edge of Gajah Wong River in the area Timoho, Yogyakarta. Ledhok Timoho Community who live in poverty and do not have the right building permits in the region can build a school named Gajah Wong School that give education for young children in their area. The purpose of this research is to determine the rationality behind the established of the school in the Ledhok Timoho Community. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The technique of collecting data are from observation, interviews and documentation. Determination of informants selected using purposive sampling. The results of this research show three things. First, the established of the Gajah Wong School encouraged by their socio-economic and environmental conditions that serve as the rationality of citizens and TAABAH to establish Gajah Wong School. The school can fulfill the educational needs of their children and can be a protector for their community. Second, establishment of Gajah Wong School is inseparable from the participation of the Ledok Timoho Community, both parents and children. Their participation encouraged because they have awareness of benefits from Gajah Wong School as protector for their community. Third, Gajah Wong School implement the locality in learning. Application of the locality is used as a characteristic from Gajah Wong School and Ledhok Timoho Community. The conclusion of the rationality behind established Gajah Wong School at Ledok Timoho Community are school used as a protective of community and fulfill the educational needs for children that should be borne by government.
