The Dynamic of ASEAN Maritime Security Cooperation in South China Sea and its Implication towards Southeast Asia Regional Security

2016 | Skripsi | Ilmu Hubungan InternasionalABSTRACT The trends in Southeast Asia security issues has been centred upon territorial and maritime rights contestation in South China Sea. This semi-enclosed sea has known to be important for the surrounding states, not only possessing great energy reserves and other marine resources potential, but also become strategic international trade routes. This geopolitical advantages furthermore significant for mostly Southeast Asian states in which maritime domain is a primary feature in their economy and political affairs thus many lives dependent to it. The contestation in South China Sea will contribute to changes in the construction of Southeast Asian regional security architecture. With its reputable success in managing intra-state conflict within Southeast Asia, ASEAN demanded to have such capabilities in managing the emerging conflict in South China Sea, particularly the dispute between some of its members and other involving parties especially China as the most assertive player in this particular conflict. However challenges for ASEAN in managing South China Sea disputes are not limited to territorial sovereignty conflicts but also in non traditional security aspect such as illegal fishing activities, piracy and armed robbery, sea terrorism and other transnational crime such as human trafficking. This thesis is an assessment towards ASEAN new approach in maritime security sector, emphasising the need to concern more in non-traditional security sector in which projected to be the key to elevate Southeast Asian regional security and more importantly to secure maritime domain in the region.
