ABSTRACT This thesis is to show how the emergence of MST as contra hegemonic movement against the modern agriculture in Brazil. As a intangible form of power, modern agriculture is little known as hegemonic project by Brazilian government. MST emerged as contra hegemonic movement due to the concentration of land in the hand of few elites as effect of modern agriculture arranged by the government. To analyze the problem, the writer conducted literature study by examining the related printed or online books, journals, and news. The result of the research shows that MST emerges in three stages; economic corporatist and colective actions, national populer movement, and contra hegemonic movement. In the stage of contra hegemonic movement, MST conduct the war of posistion as strategy to challenge the hegemonic power by organizing land occupation, providing education and school, creating their own media, and other form of strategies.
