ABSTRACT Following the end of the Cold War, conflicts around the world transformed and declined in number. However, Angola‘s conflict was not one of them because it survived the end of the Cold War. This paper will analyze the factors which caused the prolonged and escalated conflict when the super power countries were no longer backing the parties involved. The concept of conflict escalation and domestic level of analysis will be used to analyze. There are three factors that caused the prolonged conflict in Angola: conflict solidarity, conflict resources, and strategic escalation. Both government and rebels mobilized certain ethnic groups to support them and fight other ethnic groups. Unilateral escalation was also done because it was the rational thing to do so. However, of these three factors, conflict resources is deemed as the most important factor in prolonging and escalating the conflict in Angola. The parties involved had control over the country‘s big resources, such as oil and diamond – which were exploited by the government and rebels respectively. The natural resources were used to support the conflict as the foreign countries involved in the proxy war stopped sending military and economic aid. Keywords: Angola, civil war, conflict escalation, post-Cold War, conflict resources, ethnic rivalries
