ABSTRACT Activities of sand and stone mining in Mount Merapi’s slopes cause rejection of Sengi society. The main issues are environmental damage, public facilities damage, and social problems. Sengi society doing public policy advocacy by holding some meeting to formulate a rule. Society also held a demonstration to demand legality of the rules which they have compiled. Public participation in advocacy is the key of success in realizing the policy. Finally, the rules that had been developed could be applied in Sengi, so the activies of sand and stone mining no longer pass through Sengi’s village street. Participation of Sengi society not only stop at public policy advocacy process. Community groups in Sengi such as Masyarakat Peduli Lingkungan Hidup (MPLH), Merapi Asri (Women Farmers Group), Gadung Melati (Studio of Art), and Sengi’s youth groups assisting communities to do some activity that promote environmental sustainability. Sengi society have awareness to participate for keeping environmental sustainability. Keywords: participation of civil society, public policy advocacy, environmental sustainability
