ABSTRACT Economic growth is currently occupied by the industrial economies crafts and fashion. One form of the craft industry, namely the establishment of industrial clay in Yogyakarta. Clay industry has been standing since decades ago as a regional asset. Efforts are being made in order to survive in the industry craftsmen of clay then the craftsmen trying to innovate, especially in terms of increasing the productivity of clay. This step is also supported for craftsmen began to care about the growth of increasingly advanced technology. The development of technology weapons as a way for producers to increase production. This research was conducted in the village of Godean includes three Sidorejo, Sidoagung and Sidoluhur. This research method is quantitative implemented by distributing questionnaires to 96 craftsmen of clay. These samples were taken through a random sampling techniques. When the desired data has been reached then be classified by category as determined by investigators. The aim is to look at the relationship the existence of clay craftsmen as the dependent variable with the independent variable and intervening variables that affect it. Data analysis was performed using as a cross tabulation analysis by looking at the relationship of statistical data qualitatively. This research found no significant relationship between the social environment as an independent variable with the existence of clay craftsmen as the dependent variable. The position of intervening variables in the research scheme was no effect on the dependent variable control of the variable the existence craftsmen. When linked in the context of craftsmen who still survive in Godean not obtained control between the environment and the existence of clay craftsmen. So that to survive the craftsmen still required cooperation not only with the internal social environment craftsmen but also from external factors for example craftsmen and competitor relations clay production. Efforts craftsmen to survive one of which was to improve the quality and production quality with adequate technology. In this case, the technology used is an appropriate technology that will facilitate the craftsmen in developing production. In addition, talent and tolerance craftsmen, if developed properly it will give a boost to the industry's growth with good of clay. Talent classified into two categories namely the talent acquired from the internal drive of the family as well as the talent that is developed from the influence of the social environment surrounding community. In the section of tolerance, tolerance was developed can be a way craftsmen to build good relationships among craftsmen and consumers. So, although this time the competition comes not only internally and externally, craftsmen have an effort to stay afloat in the field of industrial clay.
