Abstract China is rising as one of the emerging powers with advanced economic strength. However, China’s economic rise has serious negative consequences for the environment. China seems to reach a turning point on environmental problem which is often be a consequence for many industrialized countries. The degradation in quality and quantity of environment happened in almost entire China. As China is thought as the biggest contributor for the global environmental problem, the environmental crisis has affected almost all aspects of its people. This thesis analyzes the correlation between environmental crisis and human security in China. The human security approach broadens the scope of security analysis and policy from territorial security to the security of people. The increasing levels of environmental crisis leads to increasing threats to human security. The thesis also analyze how environmental issues turn into security issues through a process called securitization. The author argue that various forms of human security threats – i.e. environmental security, economic security, food security, health security, and personal security – can be identified based on the impacts caused by the environmental crisis. In China, the securitization process of environmental issues – air pollution and water pollution – were carried out by, among others, non-governmental organization, individuals, as well as the Chinese government. The author’s argument will be based on the concept of environmental crisis, human security approach by UNDP, securitization theory by Barry Buzan and Ole Waever, and the characteristics of China itself. Keywords: environmental crisis, air pollution, water pollution, human security, securitization, China. 1
