ABSTRACT Name : Beniardi Nurdiansyah Study Program: Sociology Title : The Social Construction of Dating Among Young People The reality of dating in a society can influence young people to do dating. Dating is accepted as reasonable behavior and is not a social deviation in some societies. Some young people get positive impacts by dating. But, the others get the negative impacts because of physical and symbolic violence. Based on that background, this research titled “The Social Construction of Dating Among Young People” was done. This research is using social phenomenology. Therefore, this research was done to explain how the individual experiences form meanings which further produce social realities about dating. Research technics used in this thesis are indepht interview and library documentation. The location of this research is Sleman regency of DIY (Special Region of Yogyakarta). There are three dating couples are interviewed and a data taken from the other research. Through this research, it was found that dating among young people and also the styles are socially constructed. The meanings of dating is not only influenced by individual desires, but also social context where he/she lives. The dating can produce social values in society, so it will be accepted or rejected by other people. Every social construction of dating that actors experience depends on the social contexts where he/she lives. With those contexts, every actor have different meanings with each other. Therefore, he/she can produce their own social construction of dating. Key words: social construction, social reality, knowledge, dating, young people
