Web series heavily relied upon video based website as its medium, such as YouTube and Vimeo to distribute. By the existing medium, web series were considered as a convergence between television and internet, broadcasting and narrowcasting, as well as a transmission and recording media that web series may reach the whole internet users, whereas the YouTube or Vimeo users may perform as a communicator with a content as well as an audience of the content. At this point, YouTube and Vimeo was understood as an „alternative room‟ as opposed to the exclusive and costly industry. Web series itself were not new in Indonesia since the forms of independent industrial entertainment production has become popular since 2012 when the “Malam Minggu Miko” web series by Raditya Dika was launched on YouTube. Web series‟ popularity as an alternative media from television and movies skyrocketed and supported by various formats and themes. Until recently, an Indonesian origin web series with LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual) theme started its debut in YouTube, titled “CONQ”. “CONQ” arrived as a visual format from a similar titled website (http://conq.me) which discussed Indonesian LGBT issues, not about the existence of gender identity nor pornography as what mainstream LGBT media presented, but approached in a universal perspective by balancing sexuality with other matters such as art, culture, and even national or international politics. This research was then designed to analyze how Indonesian gay was represented in “CONQ” web series, as a media with online video format which imbued with unique new media natures. To see how Indonesian gay described in “CONQ” web series, the research was conducted with semiotic analysis developed by Roland Barthes, which was through the signification of sign and symbol in denotation (conceptual) and conotation (contextual) order. By considering the character of YouTube medium as its distribution channel, this research also discussed about how the existing new media character affected the form of present representation and differed it with the form of Indonesian gay representation on the current conventional media in Indonesia.
