ABSTRACT Although blessed with abundant natural and mineral resources, but the people of the Central African Republic still live in poverty and underdevelopment. This condition triggered the emergence of groups who were dissatisfied with the government and tried to stage a coup. The coup against President Francois Bozize in 2013 can be regarded as the most coercive coup and most protracted armed conflict than ever before. The power of rebellion and coup carried out by rebel group Séléka, a coalition of several rebel groups from eastern and northern Central African Republic. There is a pattern that distinguishes the civil war in 2013 with other conflicts in the Central African Republic where a coup of power by a coalition of mostly Moslem rebel groups, proceed to the civil war and ethno- religious cleansing to the Moslem population by Christian group. This study sought to explain that the causes of the civil war was not religious differences but the failure of the government which prompted the contest of resources and group mobilization based on identity.
