ABSTRACT Yogyakarta has been recognised as a cosmopolitan city where various identities coexist. Yogyakara is also known as The City of Tolerance. However, recently there are many exclusive housings spread in Yogyakarta. The residents in these exclusive housings apply a lot of boundaries to present their exclusivity. One of them is their religous identity. This study tries to find the reasons behind their decision to live exclusively. This study focuses on the case found in the Indonesian Disabled Veteran Corps Housing where the residents are mostly salafi-wahabi. Salafi-wahabi is considered as minority in islam. They bring a fundamentalist approach to Islam following the earliest three generations of Islam who are the companions of Muhammad SAW, thabiin, and thabiut thabiin (salafus pious). The differences on the Salafi-wahabi’s religous practice in KCVRI becomes a collective identity and create both physical and non physical boundaries. They chose to stay within those limits and to live privately/exclusively in order to uphold the values and the norms they believe as a community. This study applies the qualitative method in the form of a single case study. The data collection was done by field observation, in-depth interviews, and also supported by the interaction pattern in Salafi-wahabi community in KCVRI housing as the secondary data to verify their values and norms. This study tries to find the reason behind the increasing number of exclusive housing in Yogyakarta. KCVRI housing becomes private and exclusive because of its residents’ choice as a method of affirming their existence as a community that has certain values and norms. Those values and norms are the salafi-wahabi’s social identity manifestation. Keywords: salafi, identity politics, an exclusive housing
