2016 | Skripsi | SosiologiABSTRACT 2010 eruptions of Mount Merapi surged Pelemsari village in Umbulharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman,Yogyakarta. Relocation was the action taken by the survivors in response to that disaster. Initially, they tried to have independent relocation collectively, but it turned out that it was unsuccessful. Therefore, there was a problem where the social capital as the source of collective idea could not support that action. This research aimed to identify the process of the decision-making and the steps of independent relocation in order to find the role and the limitation of social capital on Pelemsari residents when carrying out the collective independent relocation. This research used qualitative case study methodology. The data were obtained by interviewing the informants, observe and by the documentation. The decision-making of the relocation is based on the assessment of the damage, loss, impact, and necessity of Pelemsari residents. The steps of the independent relocation consist of advocacy and consolidation. The advocacy is considered as a means of resistance movement of Pelemsari residents toward government after the disagreement about the relocation offered by the government. Pelemsari residents independently relocate themselves by the power of their social capital without the assistance of the government. The consolidation is considered as a means of cooperation between the residents and the government in order to find an agreement about the relocation and about the limitation of the social capital. The role of social capital of Pelemsari residents about the independent relocation consist of social capital bonding, social capital bridging, and social capital linking. After the land purchase for the independent relocation, Pelemsari residents get problems that are causing their social capital limited. The cause of the limited social capital is related to the other capitals i.e. finance capital, physic capital, and human capital in supporting the availability of residents money. Furthermore, the implications of government’s intervention are on aiding money, technique, and assistance. Keywords: 2010 Eruption of Mount Merapi, Survivors, Social Capital, Independent Relocation.
