ABSTRACT Ijen crater is a sulfur crater existed in volcanoes and it is one of the biggest sulfur craters in Indonesia. Not only wealthy source becomes the tourism place but also it becomes the source of life for the society, starting from the share companies and the citizens which utilize andprocess the sulfur for various purposes. The sulfur miners which still use the traditional way attracts the attention of the writer to conduct a research, in the middle of this sophisticated world, this risky and lack-of-result job is still preserved by the sulfur miners in ijen crater with all its obstacles. The writer used the qualitative method to describe how the sulfur miners of ijen crater could survive, what things they do to survive into the condition of their work and their living environment. This research was conducted in Tamansari village, a village which is located on the Hill of Ijen Mountain where there are Processor Company and a company which takes control over ijencrater, that is PT. CandiNgrimbi.To obtain information and the data needed in this research, the researcher used purposive sampling technique where the researcher chose the informants based on the previous observation to get to know informants that can fill the information and data needed. The choosing process of informants who have special purpose was done through the result of observation in the field. The data gathered was not from the script of conversation conducted by the writer when interviewing the informants decided before, but also from the documentation such as the supporting data and also the pictures of activities whose purpose was to ease the writer in describing the situation happened in the field. The sulfur miners of Ijen Crater have their own way to survive. The work of becoming miners has been there for 30 years when the information and education is not as progressive as in this modern world, but the miners have chosen to take a hold in becoming the sulfur miners to fulfill the needs of life and to have prosperous life for themselves and their families.
