Tari Bedhaya Gendheng Karya Bagong Kussudiardja sebagai Tari Pembebasan (Perubahan Simbol-simbol pada Tari Bedhaya)

2016 | Skripsi | SosiologiABSTRACT Bedhaya Dance is a classical java dance which is performed by nine female dancers that symbolized a perfection. This dance usually came from the religious, social, epic, educating, and philosophical legends at a certain time just like Bedhaya Sang Amurwabhumi which taken from the commitment of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes. As the time goes by, the Classical Bedhaya Dance had a significant difference that is the duration time, from two hours to minutes until the transformation function of Bedhaya Dance as an entertainment. On the other hand, Bedhaya Dance was composed by creation artist Bagong Kusudiardja. One of his creation was Bedhaya Gendheng. “Gendheng” in javanese means mad or crazy. This is based on the situation happened in the proccess of making this dance which is crazy era. According to this case above, the problem of this research was getting the interpretation of the symbol from Bedhaya Gendheng Dance as a liberation dance. This research used the qualitative descriptive method so that it can describe in details. How is the Bedhaya Gendheng created, the backgrounds of making this dance, and symbols that found in the Bedhaya Gendheng. This research used the theory of symbolic interactionism by George Herbert Mead. The outline of this theory is one of the analytical method explaining that the movement is an action that was done by someone who had relation with other subject. This research was done in Special Region of Yogyakarta that is in the vicinity of Tamantirto Kasihan Bantul, RT 04 RW 21, Yogkarta 55184, precisely in Padhepokan Seni Bagong Kussudiardja, Yayasa Pamulangan Beksa Sasminta Mardawa (YPBSM) and Ndalem Pujokusuman, the residence of some of the dance artists and also Taman Budaya Yogyakarta (TBY). From the result of the field it is known that it is still stored some of the old archives in Padhepokan Bagong Kussudiardja like scrapbooks, photos, and costume formerly used by the dancers. The result of this research that Bedhaya Gendheng dance truly created to depict the situation of what happened in the reign of Soeharto when he would abdicate, and then depicted to the dance formation, and the movement that was different from Classical Bedhaya in general, because Bedhaya Gendheng was a protest form against a chaotic condition, the condition of the crazy and anxious masses. This result shown by the movement that was different from classical java dance, the dancers that was in charged to dance with harmony but without getting heed to the gamelan with fast tempo. Without the magical element and sacred in Bedhaya Gendheng Dance, but a depiction of the real condition in masses. Key Words : Bedhaya, Gendheng, The Meaning of the Symbol in the Dance
