ABSTARCT Marriage is one of the transforming steps in life in which individuals face more complex responsibilities and needs. That is why many believe that marriage is a sacred and pure bond. Thus, in order to achieve the said bond, it requires a thorough physical, mental, and financial preparation. Ironically, the marriage that is supposed to be full of responsibilities and necessities is carried out by underage individuals, which are teenagers. This research emphasizes on the social construct of the society in Desa Krambilsawit, Kecamatan Saptosari in relation with the Underage marriage experienced by female teenagers. In this case, the social construct is in the form of meaning from the parents and the brides-to-be. The sociological analysis in this research is based on the Theory of Social Construct by Peter L. Berger and the Theory of Social Exchange by Peter Blau. This study employs the qualitative method with the approach of case study. The method is used to explore the cases of Underage marriage experienced by young women in Desa Krambilsait. These female teenagers are the main informants in this research. To further support the data, the parents and the husbands are interviewed as the secondary informants. Moreover, the present writer is doing the observation by taking participation in the daily life of the research subjects. From that, the present writer is able to take the valid data and give a detailed description of the phenomenon. The result of this study shows that Underage marriage is perceived as the solution to poverty and unwanted pregnancy (Kehamilan Tidak Diinginkan or KTD). The society, in this case represented by parents and the daughters, sees daughters as the economic burden in the family. Thus, Underage marriage is believed as the solution to economic problem in the family since the women will become the husbands’ responsibility after marriage. Beside the financial factor, Underage marriage is also perceived as the prevention to the problem of unwanted pregnancy (KTD). It is regarded to be able to ‘protect’ the women from social punishment caused by KTD. This kind of meaning leads women to the impacts surfacing from the Underage continuous poverty, and divorce. Keywords: Underage marriage, women, impact, social construct.
