One of those consequences is a cultural hibridization in which global and local culture are transformed into a new culture without any domination from one culture to another. As a contemporary art form, Wayang (shadow puppet) Hip Hop from Ngestiharjo, Kasihan, Bantul is a perfect example of cultural hibridization. Wayang is not simply a work of art or cutural heritage passed from one generation to another. Rather, it is a medium of communication embodying social criticisms. Social criticsms in Wayang Hip Hop are resulted from the mixture of the art of shadow puppet and hip hop music. Therefore, this study aims to get a better understanding of Wayang Hip Hop show as a form of cultural hibridization, which is embodied social criticisms, in contemporary Javanese society. This study employs a case study in which the primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with Ki “Benyek” Catur Kuncoro as a puppet master (dalang) of Wayang Hip Hop and his crews, while social criticisms were extracted from the narrative of the performance. The other data were yielded from observation and document analysis. This study shows that the core narrative of Wayang Hip Hop is deeply rooted in Javanese society. The show conveys social criticisms in two methods, namely the story is being narrated and the song lyrics is being performed. The social criticsims in Wayang Hip Hop can be found either in the main or side show. The governemnt polices and its practices are the main object of criticism. Furthermore, Wayang Hip Hop show encourages the younger generation as the major audience to think critically.
