ABSTRACT Group communication is one of communication form used by humans to develop communication skills in a society. Along with the development of communication technology, group communication not only can occur face-to-face, but also virtually by new media. Group norm as one of component group communication is also formed in online communication along with the movement of online group communication. On the other hand, adolescents whose characters are in need of support from peer groups are very familiar with the advancement of new media nowadays. They use new media as an extension of the peer group communication. One of the new media that are known and used by them is LINE Messenger. They take advantage of the group chat feature to greet each other and connect the conversation. Based on both the above phenomenon, researchers used ethnographic methods to explore the group norms which are formed and lie in the adolescent group communication. An online group that consists of students of class VIII SMPN 5 Yogyakarta included in the study for six months. Researchers conducted participant observation, focus group discussion and interviews during the study. Results showed that the group norms formed from the interaction that accumulates over time. There are various forms of group norms established and applicable in the adolescent group chat. The process of formation of group norms is perceived as a unified whole with the form of group norms in force. Keywords: Group communication, group norm, adolescent, group chat instant messaging.
