Abstract Lao’s government steps in arrange a national tourism development strategy over the years has shown results. Sustainable development in tourism promoted by Lao makes this country got the attention of the European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT). Sustainable development is one of the core of normative principles of European Union. In 2013, Lao was awarded by ECCT as World's Best Tourist Destination. In developing tourism, Lao National Tourism Administration (LNTA) uses the concept of Tourism Development Strategy and creates a master plan called the National Tourism Strategy and Action Plan (NTSAP). Lao take an active role in Sustainable Tourism Development Project (STDP) initiated by the countries which are members of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
