ABSTRACT Disaster is an event or series of events that threaten and disrupt the lives of the people caused by a natural or non-natural factor and human factor that lead to the emergence of casualities. The problem of disaster risk reduction is currently a very important issue for development in the community, especially for Indonesia which included in disaster-prone countries. The lack of disaster-related knowledge in community culture needs a human resource capacity building so that later the strengthening of the capacity of the local community can mobilize the potential for reductioning risk. One of the most important actors that is expected to be a motor in disaster risk reduction efforts are students. Student organization is a space that is appropriate for students to develop themselves and to apply science to the surrounding community. One of student organizations among UGM which engaged in disaster response is the students’ mountaineering club. The students’ mountaineering club is not only engaged in activities of mountaineering experience, but also in terms of environmental protection and emergency response. The problem that arises is the effectiveness of capacity building of that organization as a driver of disaster risk reduction. It still needs to be developed and enhanced as they are also facing great risks when doing outdoor activities as well as disaster risk reduction. The method use in this research is qualitative with descriptive approach. This research is conducted in Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta while the informants are being selected with purposive sampling technique. Number of informant are 9 persons, consists of the students who join the students’ mountaineering club in UGM, the member of Disaster Response Unit (DERU) UGM, and the board of joinedsecretary of the association of nature lovers in Yogyakarta. Data collection methods used in this research are indepth-interview, observation, and documentation. The discussion about the effectiveness of capacity building activities at mountaineering activity in UGM respond to disaster mitigation conditions conducted by the students’ mountaineering club in UGM through regular activities which held each period management, namely through leadership and organization training, basic education training materials and other activities. Findings in the field shows that efforts to strengthen the capacity of mountaineering club in UGM has been done by them with the help of the alumni of the organization itself or other organizations outside the campus. UGM as the college had only limited role to provide financial assistance and administrative licensing. Disaster risk management activities undertaken by students at UGM’s mountaineering club had been providing benefits for themselves personally and surrounding communities.
