2015 | Skripsi | Ilmu Hubungan InternasionalABSTRACT Pakistan is currently experiencing the shift of United States’ counter-terrorism strategy, especially under Barack Obama administration. Bordering its west side with Afghanistan, this country witnessed fighters of Taliban and Al Qaeda escaping into their territory due to War on Terror operations, establishing influence for global terrorism, in an area called Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). FATA is geographically remote and extreme and is barely controlled by Islamabad, therefore it became suitable ground for terrorism to breed. This thesis would analyze Obama’s response to terrorism in Pakistan, under targeted killing strategy. Targeted killing is an act of directly assassinate Al Qaeda and its affiliates using remotely controlled airplanes knows as drones. Drone strikes became an important counter terrorism strategy under Obama administration; the amount of strikes increased rapidly from 51 times during Bush to 360 times since Obama took the presidency.1 The main discussion in this thesis is to answer settings that became the underlying reasons why targeted killing is used as one of the important counter terrorism strategy in Pakistan. It concluded four aspects: the growth of terrorism in FATA, political conditions of Pakistan and its relation with United States, US budget deficit, and US public opinion.
