ABSTRACT Turkey’s accession to European Union is arguably as the longest accession process compared to the other states. Since 1987, Turkey was officially shown their willingness to strengthen relationship by submitting membership application to European Union. However, accession process is not running smoothly due to domestic problems which have not been well-accommodated by Turkish government. Actually, Turkey has several domestic problems that should be overcome, but minority and religious rights are still left behind as one of prominent obstacles of EU’s membership. According to European Union, Turkey has not fulfilled the political criteria based on the Copenhagen Criteria. Kurdish minority and Alevi’s community also become one of European Union’s political concerns in terms of measuring Turkey’s capabilities in overcoming domestic problems. Since AKP came into power in 2002, this party which tends to be pro-European Union has struggled to do several attempts to fulfill the Copenhagen Criteria. To what extent Turkey has implemented their attempts to accommodate Kurdish and Alevis until showing their consistency towards the Copenhagen Criteria will be one of measurments for European Union to determine Turkey’s membership.
