Kondisi Paradox of Plenty dan Kemunculan Kelompok Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) di Delta Niger

This paper summarizes and extends previous research that has shown evidence of a paradox condition in which countries with great natural resource wealth tend to grow slower than resource-poor countries. This “paradox of plenty” is also affecting Delta Niger, the oilabundant region in Nigeria. The writer demonstrates that there is direct evidence that the paradox is not only responsible for economic downfall in Delta Niger, but also hurts the ecosystem and triggers conflicts and crime in the region. This paved the way for the emergence of, among others, the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), one of the armed groups responding to the paradox.
