2015 | Skripsi | Ilmu Hubungan InternasionalChina is one of the few nations that use authoritarian model of government in modern world. In recent years, we can see the rising of protests throughout China that demand political reform toward democratization. Democracy in China is different than that in the West with, among others, universal suffrage, human rights awareness, and freedom of speech. This paper analyzes Hu Jintao’s policy regarding the democratization process and its impact on China’s domestic politics and foreign relations using two main approaches. First, China’s great leaders’ views on democracy. Second, Robert Dahl’s idea of democracy, which is used to compare Hu’s view and Western’s about democracy. It is argued that Hu’s view on ideal democratic system in China is different with Western democratic systems. This paper also explains the impact of Hu’ view on democracy to China’s behavior toward civil movements in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Tibet. Keywords: democracy; Hu Jintao; government.
