2015 | Skripsi | Ilmu KomunikasiThe reality of intimate relationship between two men remains underestimated and appears to have various stereotypes in real life. Even so, the mentioned reality also turns out to become the reality of the media. One of the media portrayal of men’s relationship reality is shown by a Korean reality show, EXO’s Showtime. The show starring EXO, a twelve-members K-pop boyband. Using Stuart Hall’s reception theory and his encoding and decoding model, this research intends to explain the intimacy shown by the participants of the show. Author performed in-depth interview to three male fans with different sociocultural background to find out how they interpret bromance shown by the boyband’s members in EXO’s Showtime. This research finds that most of informants’ reception tends to be in the negotiated and oppositional position. Author’s analysis shows that informant’s background, fanaticism, and knowledge relates to how they interpret text. As fans, the informants involved in this research do not show complete approval to idol-related issues shown by the text. On the contrary, one of the informant, who is a fanatic fan with comprehensive knowledge about K-pop, and also a media worker, indicates a strong refusal against majority of this research’s issues.
