Since 1996, Democratic Republic of Congo are experiencing an intractable conflict. Started with the first congo war, which is actually a coup attempt by Laurent Kabila and ADFL on Mobutu’s dictator regime. Continued by the second congo war, which is another coup attempt by various armed groups, backed by foreign countries, on Laurent Kabila’s regime. The war officially ended on 2003, after the signing of Lusaka peace agreement and Accord Global et inclusif (AGI). But the conflict and the violence continued until today. Claimed to be Africa’s first world war, DRC’s conflict took millions of civilians life and cause another millions displaced. Using the concepts of greed and grievance, wars that aren’t meant to be won, and war economy, this paper aims to analyze and explain why the conflict in DRC are being protracted. The results shows that the conflict in DRC are being protracted because the war economy creates a profitable state of emergency. Thus, causing a cyclical interaction between greed and grievance. And in turn, the interaction between greed and grievance continuously reproduce the conflict so the state of emergency, or in other word, the conflict, become protracted.
