ABTRACT Political Economic Analysis of the US Government Bailout Policy in Overcoming Financial Crisis of 2008 After the Great Depression in 1929, under the direction of the neoliberal capitalist economic system, the US economy continues to improve, even grow at a scale previously unimaginable. No exception to the US financial sector, which is growing along with the deregulation of financial markets in recent decades. However, all that is achieved by the United States exposed to very severe shocks during the financial crisis in 2008. To save the US economy, the government issued a bailout policies that later caused controversy because it is contradictory to the ideology of the free market that the US adopted. Because of this background, this paper made to try to answer the question of why the US government took the bailout policy as a measure to overcome the financial crisis in 2008. By using political economic analysis, some of the findings were successfully obtained in this thesis are: 1) the existence of entities that have scale of too big to fail, so that the government bailout pragmatically use as instruments to save these entities in the hope of adverse impacts on the economy can be avoided or minimized; 2) there is a connection between the need to rescue the US economy and political interests related to the elections which will be held at the end of the year.
