Ilmu Administrasi Negara)ABSTRACT Mbah Maridjan was an informal leader figure on the slopes of Merapi due to his duty as caretaker of Mount Merapi since 1982 on the orders of the Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX. In performing his duties, Mbah Maridjan has dedicated his whole life with loyalty and absolute totality. Society makes Mbah Maridjan as important person because of his noble duty. Thus Mbah Maridjan was appointed as the informal leader of the local communities. This is a forerunner of what makes Mbah Maridjan become public figures. When the volcanic activity of Merapi increased, the impact is directly proportional to the popularity of Mbah Maridjan because people prefer to follow him rather than instructions from the government through the relevant agencies. So, the high public trust in leadership of Mbah Maridjan is the focus of this research. This research was conducted in Kinahrejo, Umbulharjo village, Cangkringan, Sleman. The purpose of this study includes three things: (1) To describe the figures of Mbah Maridjan on slopes of Merapi. (2) To describe the phenomenon of Mbah Maridjan‟s leadership as an informal leader and public leaders on slopes of Merapi, and (3) to describe the forms of public trust towards leadership of Mbah Maridjan on the slopes of Merapi. The object is achieved by phenomenological qualitative method. This method is most appropriate in describing factually, and describe the Mbah Maridjan‟s leadership phenomena. The source of the data in this research include; The primary source was obtained from interviews with informants; and secondary sources obtained from the literature, media documentation, journals and studies that have relevance. In reviewing the various findings about leadership Mbah Maridjan, the theory used as a foundation include: (1) Transformational Leadership, (2) Servant Leadership, and (3) Authentic Leadership. These three are themost relevant theory because it has many theoretical suitability of various facts found. Several other theories are also used as support and to enrich the analysis. The findings of this research are: (1) Mbah Maridjan as the informal leader has reflected the characteristics of three types of leadership, that is servant leadership, transformational leadership, and authentic leadership. (2) People of Merapi‟s slope so respecting Mbah Maridjan with all his simplicity. (3) The high public trust in leadership of Mbah Maridjan also caused by public trust in Javanese mythology, interpersonal intelligence of Mbah Maridjan, and 'Maridjanisme' ideology which appeared in the daily life of society the slopes of Mount Merapi. Based on these results, then obtained some specific recommendations that can be used by both formal and informal public leader; (1) Public leader must be able to understand the socio-cultural situation in a region so as to get closer to the community. (2) Public leader must have an objective view in dealing with any problems that exist. (3) Public Leaders must being a role models that can be used as a good example by society to increase the public trust of his leadership.
